Sydney Art-deco meets Palm Springs Mid-century modern at apartment in Perth
The Lilo apartment is situated in the Art-deco building on the Cottesloe beach front, one of Perth’s most popular spots for swimming, snorkelling and surfing. The client asked Ohlo Studio to fulfil his refine brief.
“The building has seen better days but this long-term rental apartment offered our client the opportunity to live in immediate proximity to his workplace and accesses the best views in town. As such, our task was to vastly improve the look of the apartment without spending large sums on the base build. Our client works long ours in the public eye and it was important to come home to a laid back, sophisticated and ordered refuge in an environment also suited to entertaining clients and friends. The client brief in visual terms was ‘Sydney art deco meets palm spring mid century; seaside eclectic with a slightly masculine edge’. The design has been received exceptionally well by both our client and his guests. Within economic limitations (based on the property being leased by our client) the space was completely transformed without large demolition or impact on the original structure. This was possible as our client was open to using strong palette and the building has just enough of the right ‘feeling’ and form to be able to play on it. When our client relocates in 5 years time he will have a great furniture and art collection that will age well and the cost of the fitout spread over the 5 years will have been economical for the use and impact it provided. Everything in the apartment has been carefully considered and curated. The ‘visual’ brief could have resulted in a chaotic assortment of styles, but the composition is harmonious and playful. The spatial experience is sophisticated while still having a softness that makes it accessible and warm,” explains Ohlo Studio
